Question

I bought my Grand Voyager last night, it's a 2006 Chrysler Grand Voyager Limited Xs Crd, 2776CC Diesel, 5DR, Auto with all the bells and whistles in great shape for its age and was a great price too.

I just have a few questions regarding the car and if I'm posting in the wrong place then please do let me know!

Firstly, it came with no user manual other than for the stereo and DVD player - so I need one, any clue where I can find one online, I've looked everywhere with no luck.

Secondly, the clips that hold the sun visors to the roof are both snapped. I was quoted £30 for them from a breaker which is crazy money, any ideas where I can get some for less than that?

Finally, it had no fuel in when I got it, first thing I did was fill it up, few minutes later the yellow engine light came on, I can only conclude that it had something to do with me fuelling it up but I'm not sure... any help would be appreciated, could it be a faulty fuel cap?

Thanks in advance guys!

Welcome Newbie!

Or, they were available from Pentagon Chrysler in Barnsley a year or so ago.......

I paid about 7 quid each if I remember rightly,

I've had a few bits off them, at much less than breakers wanted.

Best one was the triple zone fan speed regulator (petrol models), £85 delivered new, or £90 old and used plus postage

On the engine light question, don't dismiss the possibily - if it was a private seller, sorry to be suspicious - that they reset the light to get rid of it.

When I sold my 2nd GV, AFTER a test drive and getting a deposit, I put it back on the drive and THEN the light came on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blooming unbelieveable, but it happened.

All it was on that was the Lambda sensor heater, so I got him the sensor, agreed a discount, and he arranged to get it fitted as I couldn't sort it in time.

Engine code readers are cheap as chips on ebay and will clear engine codes. But it won't clear the problem, which is why the lights come back on.

Agreed here, need to figure out what the light is on for, so firstly if it was a garage it came from, ring them and get it back to them for diagnostics, you have that right as a new buyer (as bignev says, you actually have similar rights with private sales too).

But, you can check codes yourself doing the "Key dance" (See searches on all forums for it) but it's this:

Start by turning the ignition key to the last stop before it starts, on and off three times within 5 seconds ending in the on position on the third time

So the sequence is ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON

When it works (It takes a few attempts to get right and the timing) your mileage indicator will change and start to scroll through the fault codes it has stored. Have a pen and paper and write them all down (They start with P00 generally) and post back with them to look up.

Thanks all, well got the manual thankfully once I figured out that the Town and Country in the US was the same as the GV! As for the light, it is still on but the dealer who sold it to me has been in touch and keeps in touch, and offered to have it turned off by a friend of his about 3 hours away, looking for someone else now unless anyone here knows how to reset the light?

Apparently it is a fuel cap issue, although the fuel cap is on tight, this is the code I get - P1635

Any ideas?

Have discovered another issue that may or may not be fixable by me - the d/s sliding door works fine, but won't lock or unlock using the central locking system...

On the central locking, you can confirm if it's the locking motor by getting the one off the working side and plugging into the duff side, if it the moves the actuator arm that's all you need.

Searched ebay (where mine came from) and found this

Mine actually came over from the US, there were no UK sellers last year!!

Hmm,

Fault code:

  • P1635 5 Volt Reference Circuit

So that's nothing to do with the fuel cap, unless anyone else can confirm the code to double-check my lookup? (P1635 also shows up as glow plug relay fault elsewhere I've looked up)

So by the sounds of it he just wants to clear the code and move on but it's better to clear it, then see if it comes back, if it does it's worth looking into the fault to resolve it.

Hey all, so... update....

I typed the code in incorrectly... it is actually P1685 and I have the car booked into a specialist on the 17th Oct in Chester which the seller is paying for under warranty thankfully. They will also look at the door lock for me.

I still haven't found any sun visor clips for less than £30 delivered which is ridiculous for a couple of bits of plastic! Still looking!

I have another problem with the car but I will pop it in a new thread as it's unrelated... loving the GV so far though!

Ah ok.

P1685 is a skim key fault code, which some people seem to have pop up from time to time. (No problems starting? If not then it may be a rogue fault code) I'd find out what they're going to do, just to check they don't just clear the light as it may stay off for a week, a month, a year and then return! Glad they're taking it in and getting it looked at, that's good to hear.

Do post back after it's been in later this month and let us know what they find and how it goes.

Great thanks, just need to solve the clip and engine light issues now!

Are we sure this is the engine light

When I bought my voyager same thing happened...filled up then light on dash came on.... the light was 3 waves arrows on top display...

After a lot of digging found that this is normal as it's for the aux heater and will only illuminate if heater above a certain temp and you have to have more than a 1/4 of tank of fuel....

As yours was below 1/4 as was mine the light would not be on but once you filled up it kick starts the heater and light comes on to say aux in operation....

If this is the light then nothing wrong...hope this helps

SO! An update!

I took the car into the dealership I had been told to go to by the salesman I got the car from. They found THREE different codes but no reason for them being there, so, they reset the computer, updated the software and the light has gone and hasn't come back as of yet. That's the first thing, and was covered by the salesman and my warranty.

They also listened when I mentioned how heavy the smoke was from the cabin heater exhaust so they decided I needed to change the autobox filter and oil which he has also agreed to pay for - so once they get those parts in, I can go get that sorted out!

Unfortunately, he wasn't prepared to sort out the problem with the central locking, so that remains an issue that I will have to figure out in another thread!

Thanks guys!

Sounds like a bit of progress, but I'm a little wary of this bit:

"They also listened when I mentioned how heavy the smoke was from the cabin heater exhaust so they decided I needed to change the autobox filter and oil"

Now, an autobox filter and oil change isn't a bad thing, it will have 0 impact on the cabin heater exhaust smoke, I cannot work out how on earth they think those are related? So don't hold your breath that it will stop the smoke from the cabin heater being heavy. Mine is from time to time, I notice when I've stopped and it's on wind-down, but after adding a second engine thermostat and the car gets up to temperature properly now it's not an issue as the cabin heater isn't on much.

(Does your temperature gauge get to 1/2 way, or does it creep around the bottom/quarter? If so then chances are your engine thermostat is stuck open and the engine isn't getting up to temperature).
