Resetting The Service/oil Light, Dealer Only?

Question

Hi guys,

just had a full service done on my car, the garage did originally say that they could reset the service/oil light, but unfortunately they can't.

Any ideas if this is dealer only? Most of the other garages I called for quotes could not reset the lights either.

Is it possible to do it with an OBD II reader? I have Torque Pro on my Android phone but my reader died last year and I never replaced it. Could borrow one or just buy one. I did notice the garage plugged in a device in the same OBD II port to try and reset it.

Which engine do you have? If it's a diesel you need to do it "properly", see attached photo. Either way you can enter the milage when you changed the oil, and display the total number of oil changes. To do this you can use MultiECUScan, worth every £. I do all maintenance myself, as there's no Lancia dealer in Norway, the program is very helpful.

Hi there, I have the 1.6 Diesel with DPF fitted.

That software looks interesting, am guessing it should work fine with a Bluetooth OBD reader and my laptop, could be another way I can reset it, thanks for the info.

edit: I was looking at something like this one to buy, seems a bit better quality than say the cheap Chinese ones but not such a high price: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diagnostic-Vgate-Diagnostics-IPHONE-ANDROID/dp/B00L3A2BJ4/

It is wifi to work with more devices rather than Bluetooth.

I'm no expert in that area but I've used Paul Gilbert at MotorMech for years.

Italian car specialist. He has looked after all my Italians for a long time.

I'm sure he will have the tool required to reset this for you.

And he won't charge the earth either. Great bloke and an real Italian enthusiast.

Will do if I call.

Got my Bluetooth adaptor and it does not connect to the ECU :(

Tried it on my friends BMW and it worked with the Torque app and DashCommand for Android.

I am not sure if it is the software not able to communicate or the adaptor. So will try to install the demo version of multiecuscan on my laptop to see if that works, making it a software issue rather than the adaptor.

Hi there, the garage is willing to pay for the software and adaptors for me, which I explained is a lot better than me paying the dealer.

I have bought the software but not having luck resetting the oil light. I get Failed to execute error message.

I have a VGate iCar 2 Bluetooth adaptor. Am guessing it's not the right one or I need those special yellow, blue, purple, red cables?

Can you let me know? I see there are some modified elm327 adaptors selling on eBay.

Thanks.

Hi guys, am having problems with anything to do with oil info and resetting the oil light.

So far I have bought an extension cable for the obd port on the car as the modified adaptor I bought does not fit due to the size of the adaptor and the location of the port.

I have bought this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321522643436 it installed on my Windows 8.1 laptop fine and I can do a few things already such as reset the service light, check for fault codes etc.

Using multiecuscan anything to do with resetting the oil it just says Failed..... Any ideas?

I have noticed that in the Parameters I can see other information such as when the last service was done but anything to do with the oil like the last oil change and it shows nothing. Am guessing this is related to the same issue.

The adaptor connected on COM5 and baud rate 38400, I tried 9600 but it didn't work. Haven't tried any other settings just yet.

Any help appreciated as I am a bit lost now!

Thanks!

I think I experienced some of the same earlier, but I can't remember why right now. I will try to check it out tonight. Don't worry about the COM-port or baud rate, as long as you're connected it's ok. Different types of cables can access different things in the ECU (different ECUs), but I think you have the right one since you can access the other engine info. If I get the time, I'll check later today.

Thanks mate!

I read a post about providing the info from the app when you press F11, so may post the results of what the software can access.

edit: Also any idea on how to change to Miles instead of Kilometres in the multiecuscan app?

edit2: To be fair I was able to reset the service light by using a non modified elm bluetooth adaptor. I just thought that I couldn't do the oil reset due to not being modified.

Not sure, will have a look later on today and let you know. From memory it seems similar to what I did.

Here is the readout from the app, seems like it can sense everything required:

When trying to reset the light, did you go to: "Engine", "Adjustments", mark "Oil change" and hit "Execute"? I think that's the right way to do it. That's supposed to work with the ELM-cable, I think.

Sorry, I don't know how to get miles.

Hey I got it working, thanks!

Basically I was going into the Reset Service options rather than Engine options. And any of the oil reset settings were not working. However the one you said worked straight away. Feels like I got a bit more power coming through too at the top end.

I guess the other options probably work on cars without a DPF filter or maybe just totally different models?

Hi guys.

Having a problem with the same cable and multiecuscan.

Basically I keep getting an access denied to the com port message when I go to test the connection in multiecuscan, any ideas?

I did have to reinstall the USB drivers again for some reason, the ones that came on the disc did not work so I randomly tried others on the internet. It could be that or the cable had become faulty, not sure.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the message appears connected to the cars port and without so I don't think it's anything to do with the car or connection.
