CRD28AUTO got a reaction from bignev in Newbie 1St Post
    Hi guys & gals.
First time owner of a Chrysler. Brought a 2007 Grand Voyager Executive CRD auto 84’000 miles 4 months ago.
Learnt a lot from the forum before joining today.
Already done the button mod. Thanks leedsman.
Really enjoying ownership so far. Nice big barge to drive.
When I brought the car it had a Exide EB741 battery on (unknown age but looked old), worked fine till it got cold. Decided to buy a RedTop. Mistake. Yes it had great cranking power, but drained heavily when not used for a couple of days. I borrowed a high tech amp meter which recorded over a long weekend of no use. Car was only drawing minimal ma consistently. Yet my battery tester had it down to 40% charge. When I charge the RedTop up to 100% and leave disconnected, it retains charge. Apparently the self discharge when connected is common on these red tops. Quality is not what they used to be. In the end gave up and brought a Advanced 096R XD battery for £80 delivered. This battery is perfect. No self discharge and plenty of power to spin the crd over on cold mornings. Volt meter reads 12.8v after leaving all weekend. Result.

Sorry for the long first post, but wanted to share my experience.

I like to do my own servicing and repairs, and pretty handy with electrics and fault finding on management systems.

Hope I can contribute to the forum as much as it’s helped me already.

    HiYa CRD28AUTO

CRD's with a good battery and good LP pressure will usually start without good glow plugs. Glow takes 1-2 minutes NOT the 3 seconds on the warning light.

Changing glow plugs is always torment time wobble-end, one hardly ever gets tackled by garages - ditto many other things.

You seem to be in decent fettle, congratulations.

My Antifreeze is something I need to address when the weather gets a bit better. Mine is reddish brown and can’t see the needle readings on my antifreeze tester. So for piece of mind I syphoned 5 litres out and replaced with 5 litres of holts 05 hoat to get me through the winter. My thermostat is working fine but like @@RichardM I have a Renault in-line thermostat in my toolbox just in case.
As for the starting, I only have bother below 5 degrees C. And the it only takes a few more seconds to start than normal. (Must have some decent compression). I have found that all my glow plugs are duff, I have brought a new set, but again will wait for the better weather to change.

CRD28AUTO got a reaction from QinteQ in Which Engine Oil Do I Need ?
I had my oil changed last time at National Tyre (usually do it myself but had no time before my holiday). They used a top notch filter and Lukoil Genesis 5w40 fully synthetic oil. Cost about £65 all in.  The guy left it to drain a good hour as well. Seems good oil. ( Chrysler spec). Not used a drop since it was done and engine seems nice and quiet. (apart from the diesel knock you get on these engines!).
The oil that came out didn’t look too bad, so I don’t think these engines are too hard on the oil. They seem to run to spaceship mileages. Just stick to the oil change schedules with a good filter and either a 5w30 or 5w40 fully synthetic diesel oil. (Non dpf oil).

GV's do not like AGM batteries and the Optima is AGM. If memory serves me Chrysler invented 'on alternator logic' as long as the 80's and still use similar set ups of pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltage regulation now.

Red Tops are a straight swap big clob starter output, I decided not to use about 6 months after their very successful release because worldwide rhumor at the time said the quality had gone down the toilet, this aH charge duration is usually overcome by run time. In my case not overcome because of what I describe as "lifestyle" or too short too infrequent run time. This time frame coincided with the world and mama Mercel banning the previous virgin lead in SLI batteries and the abortion that is a % of scrapyard lead recycling for the green brigade in the EU.

BCM/IPM/button thermocouple under battery sends.uninelligible AGM control info to logic in alternator. I bought an F21 AGM and had charge rate problems everafter. It took me five years to evidence the FACT that the F21 manufactured two identical ID numbers one was AGM/grey the other SLI/black and I have photographic evidence of this.

So we all make mistakes. That's what forums are for .. .. to learn from each other. Best of luck.

I actually own a ILink400 but have not yet brought the Chrysler module. I have the VAG and Vauxhall modules on it. It is a excellent diagnostic tool for the money and allows you to perform most dealer level adaptions. I have used it on many cars including my current Golf v6 4motion 2.8, also Audi TT 3.2. I have plugged it into my Grand Voyager and it does scan and delete codes out the box, but you would have to buy the Chrysler software module open up its full potential.

Welcome to the forum CRD28AUTO. Infrequent [lifestyle] (charge rate)] use plugues UK CRD-GV's.100% agree with your comment on RedTop's "Quality is not what they used to be" Virgin lead use is heavily penalised by the EU, similarly they legislated for all batteries to contain a % of scrapyard lead. Green policy I suppose.
