  1. Hi, thanks for your help. I may be a little slow replying, got a lot going on, but I need my car up and running. thanks once again.
  2. Hi, my car is a 2005 Chrysler Grand Voyager LX crd 2.8 stow n go , I think its RG and its an auto. At the moment my wife is in the final stages of cancer so my head is a little foggy. Not a lot of time to spare researching but trying to get info for my mechanic friend. As mentioned before in my ownership everything has been done over the last year and it passed mot recently with no advisories. It has a new top of the range red top battery as recommended by Groves Batteries in Cheltenham. Just checked first registration, Nov. 2005. Regards oldginger.
  3. Old ginger here. I don't know how to add more info, so using the reply. Reconnected battery and tried to start it using both keys in turn. Turns over well but no joy. I did notice the fuel gauge needle slowly going right up and then down continuously, Hope someone has some pointers.
  4. Hi everyone. Jumped in car last night to move it, turned over normally but would not start. I had been out in it earlier and all was well. My mechanic friend has had a look at it and it is fuelling ok. His reader only covers petrol models. I have no books so can someone explain the key dance procedure as we believe it could be an immobiliser issue. Any other ideas would be appreciated, thanks in anticipation, old ginger.
  5. Hi, everyone. I purchased my 55 plate 2.8 GV stow n go at the end of June 2019 breaking all the rules but I got it quite cheap. I had been reading this forum for some time because I really fancied one of the stow n go's, Right to the point. full service ,new cambelt kit including water pump and pulley's. Because of the high mileage 189k I decided to research various fuel additives and came across Archoil. I have found this treatment excellent and it does what it says on the tin. The dreaded hand brake problem is sorted and works well, not without much hassle. The car came with new top hats discs and shoes and pads. Whoever fitted these items used the old springs which was a big mistake. It appears thorough cleaning. appropriate greasing and new spring kit is a must. A full clean and greasing of the handbrake and clockspring was a nightmare but it was worth it. I found a mass of photos on line showing the different handbrake systems. The coolant system was flushed on 3 separate occasions and with the thermostat mod new pressure cap it appears to have improved. Passed mot Friday 29 May with no advisories and what had I done to keep the emissions so low on a high mileage engine. The car drive and behaves impeccably and I love the versatility. I don't understand the complaints about fuel consumption because after a lifetime of artic trucking experience if driven correctly its fine. This forum has been a great source of help and information thanks to all. Once again folks look after your car and it will look after you. Look after yourselves, Oldginger.
  6. Thanks for the help QinteQ. I will get my wife or grandson to help me with this because once you go to downloads and the rest your talking gobbledygook. I will add though, that I can happily take them apart and rebuild them as daft as that may sound. Once again many thanks. As a side, in my opinion the much aligned Austin Maxi was the most versatile and mechanically friendly car designed and once relaunched with the 1750 engine and rod link gear change I found it excellent especially with a wife and 3 small kids. I would be interested in the opinions of any members who owned or experienced these cars, regards oldginger.
  7. Thanks for the info much appreciated. The oil appeared to be in good condition but showing low on the dipstick when hot and normal when cold so went for measured top up 300 MILLILITRES. As mentioned before put in stupid bid and won it. Definitely no regrets. 187k on purchase and 191k + now. 2.8 crd gv mk4 stow n go. Its earned its keep as a load lugger and 7 seater already. The family love it. I am not very good on computers but I muddle through so I will probably come across a bit thick at times so please bare with me. I am very much old school and cars seemed so much easier back then. I will attempt a manual download again soon. Thanks again.
  8. Hi all. I posted a gearbox enquirery recently and after consulting my young mechanic friend we decided to just do a top up. It is performing much better and a trip to Swindon this weekend should tell me whether its really done the trick. Thanks for the replies on the enquirery. I have no booklets with the car so I have another query. When at idle the car will not go above 2500 revs. Is this normal? In gear it behaves normally with plenty of power. Thanks in anticipation.
  9. Hi, only just picked up this topic. I read lots of topics during my research into replacing the battery that came with my GV. Where I live is a very well known battery supplier and everyone I consulted pointed me that way. Without hesitation he recommended a red top and in the time he has sold them he has not had any complaints. It has performed very well and my trips are usually local & sometimes days apart. I bought my battery back in early November so a few cold spells and my very old Exide battery tester shows all's well. I will let the forum know the minute there's any change. I think I bought my car around the same time as you, broke all the rules, but touch wood I seem to have done well. There are obviously common niggles but the forum sure helps. A couple of Austin Maxi's have come up lately but she who must be obeyed says " your too old to mess with cars" so "NO". Soooo easy to work on Issigonis the working mans designer. Love the Voyager though. All the best.
  10. Hi, I am not sure if my GV auto gearbox is behaving. In the lower gears it seems fine but in the top gear it seems to suffer from some slip especially when accelerating from 50mph +. Its a heavy car so is this normal? I have had a major service since buying it due to no service history and I am wondering if a gearbox service is in order. Just to keep up with products, are the ATF VI oils by Dextron,Smith&Allen, etc, ok?. I have sorted some niggles due to this forum, lots of help and advice available so thanks to all.
  11. Hi everyone. My G.V. has a manual tail gate and I would like to power it, so firstly is the wiring loom in position to plug in to? and do the parts plug in and allow it to work without issues?. Your help is much appreciated.
  12. Thanks legonsuk, good video. The reason I asked is I read somewhere that cgv's had tamper proof electrics to prevent hot wiring etc. and that an appropriate control box was required with any aftermarket fittings, it seems not so. This means I will be fitting my sensors asap. Many thanks.
  13. Hi, My CGV is a basic LX with no parking sensors. I have purchased a basic buzzer kit so will there be any problems wiring it to the reversing light?. I have a beeper that sounds off in reverse and I assume that is just what its for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  14. Hi, the mechanic that did the work on my car is very good and keenly priced. I was introduced to him about 18 months ago when my heath took a turn for the worst. He like me is old school, but being in his late 30's / early 40's is young enough to have kept up with the new and not necessarily better b/s under the bonnet. He does exactly what I ask for. I supplied the oil (Castrol Magnatec 10/40 fully synthetic), all the parts, and he did the work. I never gave the antifreeze a thought. I took the car to him today and right there and then he went through it. Everything is ok. Whilst he checked the car over just inside his unit I suddenly noticed the temp gauge had moved to spot on half way and I put the adjusters on high and turned the blower to full. Hayho! nice warm air. what can I say after all my phaffing, um not a lot. It did cool down after a couple of minutes but it was around 22 degrees outside and quickly got warmer in the car. My mechanic friend then tried to explain the vagaries of climate control. He's got no chance, I am 71 next month and beyond repair mentally but I am still physically reasonably mobile. I have ordered some HOAT 05 and he will do the work when it arrives, and yes he uses a general OAT coolant. I will do the mods in time and once again many thanks for the help. Love this car ,but still prefer the simplicity and versatility of an Austin Maxi.(clutch renewal 35 minutes tops, head gasket under a hour etc, etc). One of most media maligned cars ever. All in my opinion of course. Once again Many thanks.
  15. Hi, thanks for the reply and I shall pop to the mechanic to see what coolant he used. I am still concerned about the low/little pressure in the system, but I will let you know how I get on later. many thanks QinteQ.
  16. Hi, My 2.8 crd runs well but my heater is not blowing hot air. It has recently had new belts including water pump but getting rid of air locks was a real chore. After a week I checked with the mechanic and he checked circulation and all seamed well. The heater is still only blowing tepid air.Stripped out fascia panels to check actuator units and all seems well. Its about 7 weeks since the full service and I have noticed over the last few days that the coolant system is not pressurising, the top hoses are not overly hot and the bottom hoses are tepid. With this sealed system and no radiator cap I cannot tell if the coolant is circulating properly and if the thermostat is stuck open. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  17. Hi, just joined the forum. I broke almost every rule in the book by buying a 2005 gv with 187000 miles, no service history. I did test drive it and it had a late June mot. I've had new cam belt and aux. belts fitted + full service. I have researched these cars for quite a while so had a little knowledge when buying. This forum has been very useful already and I hope to sort out a couple of niggles in the near future. I and my family love this car already, its a stow- n- go 2.8 crd. Thanks to all contributors,Oldginger.
