Try giving the boot struts a good oiling. I thought mine were failing and gave a wd40 spray to the hinges at each end and also where the strut "telescopes" and it fixed it. -

I would persevere with the key turn trick, have you got it to work in the past.
My engine light comes on regularly and it seems to be either fuel pressure or egr valve. Neither seem to have any effect on the car at all. The only problem I have is the light comes on that often I've got a little complacent with it.
When either of these issues cause the light to come on it clears after a few starts, I think third time I start it after the light comes on but it may be four.
If you can get the codes someone on here will help you though.

I've been told that the actual housing has a gasket that fits between it and the engine. This is a common leaking place as far as I've been told. -
