Sorry - 2.4l DOHC engine

Hi everyone. I've just bought a 55 plate voyager se (2.5l petrol) and am really impressed by it. There are a few points which I need to get sorted though, the main one being that the speedo doesn't register anything and the milometer isn't showing an increase either. Having checked out a few threads on here I'm pretty sure it's the sensor on the gearbox but I'd like to make sure before sourcing a part which I might not need. Does anyone know if I can test the sensor to see if theres any problem with it or could it be something as simple as wear and tear not allowing it to connect internally? Thanks in advance.
