  1. A change of fluid cured the noisy reverse gear and slight vibration through the column on my car.

It's an easy job. Just get the car high enough, safely, and have a good size bowl ready. A washing up bowl from Wilco will do, and use ATF +4..... not cheap but worth it.

I also noticed in the Chilton manual, they recommend silicone sealer for the sump gasket.

  2. No my car did it only while moving.

My mistake was associating the whole deal with the fluid change.

I spent all day on the car myself., it was a number of problems that occured all at the same time.

Transmission was a litre short, garage's fault, but mine also for not checking the work they did.

The left hand tyre was unbalanced.

Getting these things fixed cured most of the vibration.

The noise over bumps appears to be the top of the strur.

Check your trans fluid, if it's not right it can cause vibration, even stationary if you keep it in drive.

  3. Just had the Grand Voyager in for a transmission filter and fluid change.

I have now noticed a vibration from the front end of the car, coming up through the steering column.

It happens quite often on a journey, almost like there is a bad road surface.

I don't know what the problem is, but it has only started since the fluid change.

    Any ideas?

  4. Hi Alex

I had all the battery problems during the cold spell a few weeks ago. I bought a good battery, ie. recommended for the car.

I will make sure the fluid is as you say. ATF + 4.   I looked it up on Google.ANTI shudder was mentioned. very slight shudder  is what I am experiencing in reverse.

I wonder if it has the wrong fluid added in the past?

  5. Hi Mate

    thanks for the reply.

I have booked the car in for a transmission oil and filter change. My garage suggested exactly what you say.

I have recently had a new battery fitted......sometime in March.

I dont have a check engine light, but that will be checked when it goes in for the fluid change.

What causes the noise to start when the battery has been disconnected?

It's not a loud noise but it is noticable. gears all function correctly.

  6. My right hand mirror had stopped folding, and the left hand mirror used to travel too far.

I took the right hand one off cleaned it and oiled evrything, still didn't fold. Every other power adjustment was fine.

When the drive shaft (right hand) broke, it banged about a lot.  both mirrors have started working perfectly.

Anyone got any idea's why this would happen? seems very coincidental.

  7. Got the shaft replaced.

The guys in the garage nearby, came out on saturdat afternoon. got under the car and cut the remains of the shaft off to stop it swinging around, they towed the car back to the garage, 1/2 mile approx.

They ordered the shaft on Saturday. I picked the car up today runs very well. As a bonus the folding mirrors have now started working??????????

£250 all in. Not bad huh.

If anyone is near North Wales these guys have all SNAP ON equipment. Code readers etc.

  8. Just had the right hand drive shaft shatter into small pieces at the wheel end.

It happened on the main street of town. The noise was scary, and absolutely no warning.

The remains of the shaft still turned and jammed the steering wheel.

The local garage came out and cut the remains of the shaft in half so the car could be towed.

The park gear won't hold the car with the shaft broken, so the parking brake had to hold it on a downhill.

Be warned check the shafts occasionally.

I hate to think what the result would have been on the motorway.

  9. The hoses are above the exhaust, so if the car bottoms out the exhaust gets it first.

I think the point is, if these pipes rot through, they will leak coolant. On a journey it could be serious.

I found second hand pipes on ebay for £70, \nd they had corrosion.

I fixed a porous sump with that mix you used, it worked well.
