Mkv Gv Crd Head Gasket Or Egr Cooler?

Question

I’ve had my GV MkV 2.8CRD for a couple of weeks now but on the way back from the seller a noticed there was no heat out of the vents on any setting. The expansion bottle was low on coolant and a bit mucky. I pulled the pipes off I could easily access and flushed it all through with the garden hose.

After several refills with water only and then HOAT/deionised water and bleeding for an hour each time the pipes are becoming rock solid when the bottle cap is fitted and it overheats. With the cap off air constantly blows from the small hose from the top of the rad into the bottle. If I rev the engine it blows coolant out of the bottle. I thought immediately head gasket but researching further I’ve seen the EGR cooler can have similar symptoms.

It’s only done 99k and still runs perfect save for the overheating. Exhaust gas is clear and no mayo in the oil. Any help identifying the issue would be great. The EGR cooler takes minutes to change but a new one eye wateringly expensive. The head gasket kit is a bit cheaper but the car would be out of action for a week.
