Humming Noise

Question

Hi All

My 1999 2.5TD has developed a humming noise/resonance during hard acceleration. (Overtaking or getting up to motorway speeds). Happens in any gear and at any speed. Noise stops when foot eased off accelerator or when car speed matches accelerator demand (my foot). Performance not affected and, as I say, only happens when accelerating hard. Any thoughts anyone?

Many thanks.

Mmm sounds like a bearing - water pump / fuel pump?

Can you hear it when you replicate acceleration on the drive with hood up?

quote 'when car speed matches accelerator demand' = fuel pump, but guessing

Have you checked fuel filter - if it has not been changed, it could be a fuel starved' scenario.

Condensate tank empty?

So many options, lift the hood and slowly accelerate out of gear and report back .....

So sorry for leaving it so long to respond. When originally posted we set off on our summer holidays driving the old bus around Ireland. Bizarrely, during those 2 weeks and after a 1000 miles it seemed to have sorted itself out and no reoccurrence since.

A new question I now have is ref front shock absorber bearings. I replaced the strut assemblies some years ago when one of the top bearing housing disintegrated. Ever since, I have had problems with the bearing ring failing ( little ball bearings littering front wishbone!). I've replaced the bearings several times and can sense it's about to go again (tell tail creaking come knocking noises). Can anyone confirm which way up the bearing is fitted, ie, does the larger diameter bearing race face uppermost or down?

Thanks again,

Mart
