Shock Absorber Replacement

Question

Got to have two new front shocks after failing the MOT, no real problem there until it came to ordering the replacements.

Lancia specify three part numbers

50710404 for the 1.4 petrols

50710405 for the 1.6 diesels

50710406 for the 2.0 diesels (and the 1.9 diesel  and 1.75 multiair we did not get)

the trouble is many after market suppliers only list one part top cover all three, this includes big names like Sachs and Bilstein. I was supplied Sachs only to find the jaws at the bottom of the damper were too narrow to accept the beefier hub carrier found on the 2.0. Further checks for the bolt holes were spaced differently to allow for a different camber and the bolt holes are M12 on the 2.0 and M10 on the other versions. Hopefully the attached picture from KYB explains the differences, but I could not find their version of the 2.0 anywhere.

I have not been able to find any supplier in the UK using the Lancia part number, and many places like MisterAuto, AutoDoc and their various other names simple list one saying it will fit the 2.0 when it will not. As the buyer has to pay return postage it could prove costly.

The only brand I have found is Marelli. The originals are Cofap and made in Poland, Cofap is now a Marelli brand. I found some on German ebay and some from Catania in Sicily but that's about it! Incidently the spring were broken last year and lowered springs are fitted (H&R) and I wonder if this has contributed to the damper failing. Interestingly the failure was not a leak allowing the piston to move up and down too readily, but the pistons were very very stiff and did little to prevent the spring absorbing any bumps.

I did and was alarmed to find the part number was different! It's a different part no for all Delta models although the Sachs box said Delta and Stilo on it.

That said, if Sachs and the like are supplying just the one part for petrols and diesels when there should be two it stands a good chance that the wrong part will be fitted to someones car

Just double checked on the Marelli site, different shocks for the Delta against the Bravo, although the hubs they bolt onto are the same!

I did, I got them KYB dampers from a Sicilian motor factor on ebay, arrived 48 hours later. DCR in Catania, just ran question through Google translate and job done. Much less hassle than trying to explain what a Chrysler Delta is at my local parts store!
