Trouble Starting

Question

Hi, New here and don't know my way round an engine.

Bought a Grand Voyager 2007 2.8CRD, within a few days had trouble starting it, it would take maybe two or three attempts turning over to start, but has gradually been getting worse. now it can take ages and multiple attempts to turn over and start, so much so its becoming a gamble and embarrassment taking anywhere.

Once started it runs well with no issues, any ideas?

My first port of call would be the battery.

Voltage before first start, and charging voltage when running.

If the charging voltage is below 14 (ideally 14.4) there's a modification you can do to get this up to the 14.4.

Hi Soupstone,

Can you tell me what that modification is (in Billy Basic terms). I am no mechanic, so if I can't do the mod myself i will have to explain it to my mechanic.

Thanks

FWIW, I just swapped to a mk5 from a mk4 GV. I drove it back to Yorkshire from Brighton with no problem, but when I cane to it in the morning, the battery was dead. I swapped it out for the battery from my mk4, which is still sitting on the drive, but that was almost dead, as she's been sat a good while. I tried juno staying the mk5, but it just wouldn't catch.

I was getting pushed due time so I resorted to the old trick of opening up the air filter cover, giving it a quick squirt of WD40, cos the cover and trying it again.

Started first time.

I don't like doing this, as I feel it can't do the paper filter any good, but I've been doing this for 25 years and it's always worked, lol.
