2006 3.3 Gv - P0344 Camshaft Sensor Problem + Dvd Screen Prob

Question

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2006 GV 2006 3.3.

Fault code P0344 - Camshaft Position Sensor.

Car drives lovely at cruising speed or light acceleration, no prob changing gears (auto) but anything over 2400 rpm or so then it coughs/splutters and holds back.

Brand new Camshaft and Crankshaft sensors fitted (as I hear they're linked).

Wiring at both sensors checked - both signal and supply terminals read 5v with engine running (without any drop in signal) or on turn over with ASD relay removed. Both ground teminals are also OK (+ve battery direct ready 12v). Anything else i'm missing here ?

Reading a few posts of people having same issues and then changing the flex plate - with mixed results ?

One thing I did notice when putting Crank Sensor in is that it drops in very easily, not a snug fit as expected or push/click into position, swivels easy too to put bolt back in ??

Anything else that could be causing this ?

Rear tank fuel filter or pump
Dodgy spark plug or lead
Coil Pack

PCM Fault (although feed seems ok)

Cleared all faults, removed battery for 15+ mins. All faults remain off apart from P0344

Roof Mounted headrail DVD screen also not working. DVD player works fine, sound from speakers but nothing on the screen. Remote control works the DVD player OK but does not switch on screen at all.

Thanks in advance for any help

Dave

Hi there,

I'm not 100% sure on what else to look for, but I'd look away from the flexplate for now, when that is nearing end of it's life you get rattling/rasping noise mainly at idle or not at load. I had an almost failed flexplate and wrote quite a bit up about it if you need more info, but I can't see how that would cause you a P0344 or hesitation as it's a solid metal wheel, it'll either work or totally give way and won't transfer any movement from the engine to gearbox.

Hi there!

Try the coil pack and the connector to it, they live in a VERY hot place on our engines.

Then plugs, and HT leads.

Stuttering under load used to be an old fashioned symptom of dodgy plugs / leads, or before modern ignition systems it was timing out and points / condenser iffy (quite old now that one though hey!!!)

Did the DVD ever work? It's the headphone button to switch on the screen in case you didn't know.

Thank you - I was hoping that someone would say that ! The car runs lovely otherwise and very smooth, no unusual sounds that point that way. The flex plate is well down the list now.. I'm sure it must be a sensor or ignition issue somewhere but so will keep looking

Hi. Thanks for the reply. That seems to be my next port of call- looking at coil pack, plugs leads  etc. Someone else has mention MAP sensor ? Suppose some many things can go wrong.... and usually do !

DVD has never worked.... not had the car that long and look like there may have been an issue before I bought it as one of the four nuts securing it to roof is missing so it has been off before !!! Looks like there is a signal to the screen from plugging in a multimeter so guessing screen has gone - shame they're £300+ second hand for the overhead rail type !

Hi, the P0344 code is also related to starter motor and/or starter circuit.

DVD screen not working there was a post about it here somewhere, is a connection at the back of the display.

Hope it helps.

Great thanks for the reply and point towards possible starter circuit issue. Will have a look for the screen prob post. Cheers

Hi Gordy, no mate these are super smooth engines and very mechanically quiet, my 05 has a VERY light tinkling from it. Silent on start, after a few second does it briefly, then buggers off till it starts to warm up.

A proper camchain rattle should be pretty horribly evident!

Mine may be a slightly worn chain, perhaps from a lack of frequent enough fresh oil, the petrols are very old tech and not meant to go far between, only 4000 to 5000, crap really.

On mine I thought initially it could possibly be the hydraulic valve lifters not quite taking up the clearance, but now definitely not anything to do with dirty oil, been changed and engine flushed plenty of times in the 3 years driving it. I even tried 10/40 at one oil change as I had a load over from my Renault van, no difference. So I carried on and dumped it out & put the 5/30's in. Mine actually says 5/20 on the filler cap!!! But the book says any of them depending on ambient temp.

The LPG solenoids are almost as loud on idle so I'm hardly worried about it .

But I did have an alternator noise, which is odd as I just spotted you mention it in the other post for the 2.8 diesel !! Properly horrible and worrying when under load, either put it in gear or neutral with AC on, and really bad both together!! But was ok just sat idling in neutral, or loaded if you raised the revs to say 1500.

For the DVD Screen, try taking the screen apart and you should find a little metal disc with a small flat side that rotated when you flip down the screen to create a link and turn it on. When I got my GV I found the same problem as you, all I did was reseat that disc and now it’s worked ever since.

It might have just rotated a little out of place so it’s not properly lining up.
