Electrical Fault.

All of a sudden, my aircon has stopped working. In fact nothing on that panel works, but there are still lights working, so I guess power is getting through.

 

At the same time the reversing sensors stopped working and I keep getting the message pop up "Check TPM System". The TPM seems to be working and the tyre pressures are fine.

 

Any ideas how to go about diagnosing this problem?

Hi, I found this on a forum:

 

1. Have a pencil and paper handy.

2. Get in the car, close the door.

 

Perform steps 3-7 fairly quickly (less than 3 sec's total time).

 

(The key should not return to the OFF position through this next sequence!)

 

3. Turn key to 'ON' position

4. then back to 'ACC'

5. then to 'ON'

6. then back to 'ACC'

7. then to 'ON'

Ok, the lights on the panel would come on when the day lights would be turned on, the aircon functionality would be on a separate circuit.

Did you check the fuses?

I assumed it would be the same circuit, anyway, I feel a bit stupid now. Fuse number 41 which handles all three of the afore mentioned features has blown.

Is everything back to normal now?

Don't feel anything, I bought a car to be able to swap parts and start mine, at the end was a burned relay...sometime the things get overlooked.

I cvhanged fuse 41 and it went up in smoke, so I guess there is a dead short.

 

In order to find out which circuit, I'll do the following.

 

Turn Aircon to off.

Replace fuse

Start Car

If the fuse blows I will assume it's the TPM because neither of the other two circuits will have been activated.

If it doesn't blow, put the car in reverse to activate the sensors.

If it still doesn't blow, turn on the Aircon.

 

Would the above be logical?

Yes, but a safer way would be to go backwards.

By all means, if is just that fuse that blows go for it, but a blown fuse means heat going through the circuit, at some point will probably cause more damage.

Try with a smaller one, if is 20A required, try with a 15A, when you say aircon does that mean vents as well?

I replaced the fuse, left the car in park and the aircon / heating set to off.

 

The fuse blew straight away. Would it be a fair assumption that it is the TPM system causing the problem?

 

My thinking behind this is that the parking sensors wouldn't have been activated, nor would the aircon / heating unit.

 

Is that a fair assumption? If so, can the TPM be turned off / disconnected?

 

One more thing though, "Check TPM" flashed up regularly, but the sensors are still displaying the pressures through the console.
