Starting Problem

Question

Hi, hoping someone can help me out.

I have a Chrysler grand voyager 2.8crd 54 plate.

Went out to start the car today and nothing. Not even attempting to start. Car was starting and driving fine yesterday.

When I put key in ignition it goes through what I call the pre flight checklist... Basically all lights are on on the dash, all dials turn in a clockwise motion, then go back to start positions. All lights go off and car won't even try to turn over. After checking manual I see that the immobiliser light is on and stays on. I believe this is why the car will not turn over.

Can anyone tell me what could be causing this and what options I have please.?

Thanks

If the normal routine is the dials turning in a clockwise motion, you've got battery/charging issues and now a flat battery.
It shouldn't do this under normal circumstances.
Jump start or charge battery short term, but you're going to need to get to the bottom of the problem.

Here's a good thread to have a read through.

http://www.chryslerforum.com/forum/chrysler-voyager-town-country-21/interest-those-getting-flat-batteries-20297/

I've done the battery mod mentioned to both my GV's to give a constant 14.4v charging voltage.

I also have a current drain on this Voyager, that's bodged at the moment to get round the issue.

Hi, thanks for getting back in touch.

I've owned the car for about 8 yrs and it's always done that on start up, so I assumed it to be perfectly normal. ??

I had the battery replaced about 2 yrs ago and it seems to be ok. It has the colour coded display on top which is showing as green(fully charged)

I've just read your OP again, I had a Kia that wouldn't start and when you turned the key to start the car, the lights all went out.

This was caused by the battery negative. Tightening this where it connected to the body solved the problem. Might be an idea to remove it, clean it with some emery paper and put it back on.

Disconnecting the battery for a while will reset everything, I don't know how easy or cheap it would be to recode the keys though.

Have you found/read this thread about immobiliser issues on the other Chrysler site?

Hi soupstone, thanks for the link. I did check out the thread, and noticed the link to the manuals is no longer available, and it appears there is no closure... don't know if the guy got it sorted eventually and how.

Hoping to find an auto electrician who doesn't cost the earth and who hopefully can give the car a once over.

I will possibly try the battery disconnect option but need to check and see if I have radio code before I do. Thanks again.

Had this a couple of years ago. Have a look at the starter motor - it's down between the radiator & the engine - & check to see if their is a yellow cable with a spade connector on it. It's a common fault that this comes off. It's the signal cable from the ignition to tell the starter motor to fire. In the trade they call it the exciter cable.

If your arms are too big to fit down as mine are you can see it from underneath & feel where it attaches.

Hope it's as simple a fix as mine was in the end. I trawled a few things online before my daughter-in-laws uncle who is a Renault mechanic looked at it for me &I had it going in under a minute

Hi, I checked the yellow cable on the starter motor and its attached and looks fine.

I read a few posts online and noticed some people talking about removing the IOD fuse briefly and fitting it again, as this is supposed to reset the system. I did this a couple of days ago and now notice indicator lights don't flash when doors are opened by key fob control. The indicator lights also don't flash on the dash control panel when doors are opened or closed again by key fob.

Can someone talk me through how to set this back up please.?

While in about the fuses I checked some and noticed the fuse between battery & starter looks like it has blown, so going to replace it hopefully 2mrw and see if it helps to clear up the issue with immobiliser light staying on and I believe the cause of the engine not turning over. Appreciate any help or advice. Thanks

Hi again, just to update on where things stand now.

Managed to get the car started and running again. Had a look at the fuses and had to replace 3 in total. The last one I replaced this morning was the PCM fuse, once fitted the immobiliser light went off, all lights came back on pre start as they should and car started, well after battery got a bit of a charge.

Thank you to soupstone and Woodie106 for your help and advice. Very much appreciated. ?
