Front Drivers Side Spring

Hi all

 

Need urgent help. I have a 12 plate Delta 1.6 multijet diesel. I've been having a knocking at the front passenger wheel and, upon taking it to a garage, I've been told that both coil springs have gone and that it would be c£425 each inclusive of labour to fix. Told it would have to be dealer only part. From the above, even that sounds steep. I'm looking at around £900 overall.

 

I need my car to get around quite urgently so need it fixed asap. Can anyone advise?

Welcome bairn - £425 each!!!! I think you are being had............ Touch wood I've not a had spring go yet (that'll do it!) but hopefully one of the other guys in this thread should be able to advise. I think Penguin used Bravo springs which are about £100 a pair.  I've just had a quick look on eper - FCA usually cross reference parts which are the same but used on different models/cars but the Delta's are listed as Lancia specific although as mentioned Penguin has used Bravo ones and to be honest the references diagram on eper look identical to me for both Delta and Bravo (although obviously that does not indicate techincal changes (disclaimer!)) Bravo JTD springs on shop4parts are about £90 a corner.

Yes in the end I did use diesel Bravo springs - they order via an engine number?. They had same number of turns, colour of paint spots should be identical  (err they apparently are important), diameter of metal etc etc.

I had even looked at getting the coils made - at a place in Sheffield, called Springcoil.  www.springcoil.co.uk

 

I spoke to Ryan and Karl on their Penguin toll free number! 0800-112-3188 (Freephone)

 

My Man in the Garage charged me IIRC £150 + I hour to fit + the obligatory gin & tonic.

Did it as part of the service, so the hour of labour could have been used / not fully used but then tipped into the cam belt / water pump and associated bits & bobs of 36k service etc etc. 

 

It was interesting to know that the 'big parent company' also wanted astronomical prices for the Delta springs, with no known availability date in UK or similarly in France / Belgium.  I was going to Belgium for a few days and would have visited a targeted garage who had ordered them in [even they had a 12 month delay.

 

My rear springs apparently visually looked OK.

 

As per performance - I did not notice any difference between old springs and new (the end of the spring had not jumped out of the cup and was still metallic and not rusty).

 

*Apparently the major cause of these springs to go, is bridging the b****y street road humps. The best way to avoid is to fully tap the hump offside and then near side etc down the road. Not to go 'inside tyre:inside tyre ' as you drive across the ever increasing road hump number.

Also had a wheel realignment completed - but no adjustment required.

Did you not manage to get a part number? It would be good to know what the diesel Bravo spring part numbers are?

Thanks all, but I had to get the car on the road quickly so it's too late (I appreciate it was a short notice post!). Just another reason why I'm getting rid of my delta asap! I'm still driving around with a change oil warning light 1000 miles after having the oil changed because no garage can reset the light and I refuse to take the car to the dealer (again) just to have the warning light reset!

Spoke to the garage and they would need to know the specific bravo size and model to give it a try. They would also charge me a fee to send the dealer springs back to the dealer if I didn't use them, and an extra labour fee if they tried to fit the bravo springs and they didn't fit. I'm just going ahead with the dealer springs as I don't know enough to give them the info they need.

 

Thanks for the responses though. I just wish I had more time to work out the cheapest option!

The dealer should have reset it when they did the service. You're panicking over nothing really... Any Fiat/Alfa Indi can and should be able to reset both the oil degradation and service light with the right plug in diagnostic tool. If they don't have the right tool their not a specialist! Examiner is the official device, but even with a laptop and multiecuscan software and the cables off eBay can do it...

Surely you just need the Fiat Bravo 1.6 diesel (2007 - 2013) springs? Can't be that difficult?

 

Guys where has the link gone for the Fiat/Alfa/Lancia EPA parts system??? Surely we must be able to get a part number??? This is going to happen to others so probably worth sorting details out now for when the worst does happen?

A better solution is to fit German ebach Pro coils that are manufactured specially for the delta, the set of 4 would cost just under 200 quids.

I had this fitted without any problems, labour should be about another 100 quids max.

You need to order these yourself online and get them to your local garage to be fitted.

Being a sporty coils, they will lower the car by 30 mm, which gives a more stable ride but no problems with potholes.

All 4 need to be changed.

Much better than the 900 quids theft from the dealer.

Mikey is right. I have 2 deltas and this year rears went on one and fronts on the other. I had to get sets from the dealer at an extortionate cost.

 

It is useful for all Delta owners to know if bravo coils fit as the can be had for a 5th of the price.

 

What is odd is the parts that came from dealer didn't match the eper system so something fishy going on.

 

I have an original of front and rear so if they go again I will order bravo set and compare.

 

Mechanic advised against lowering springs and I prefer originals. Also with stiffer springs may put more stress on mounts and wishbone which my alfa always had issues with. But at present it's definitely the cheaper option.

I still have a passenger side brand new one as the garage fitted my drivers side and after inspecting the passenger side said to keep it until neede. As I have now had enough of the Delta will be trading it in the next few weeks so it is not required

just found this and it worked ...tonight , will have to try it on the commutte 

 

Reset oil light after service... that is very important. And don't skip the oil change either.

 

1-turn on the ignition key,

2-press the gas pedal and hold it,

3-press the brake pedal 7 times without relesing the gas pedal,

4-keep pressing the gas pedal for 60sec.

5-Release the gas pedal and turn of the ignition key,

6- Wait for 60sec.

Then turn on the ignition key and start the engine. Check if the service/oil change light turned off.

That's all! The vehicle is Fiat Doblo, works on Linea, Qubo/fiorino also vauxhall combo.

 

2012 forward...
